Lionsgate to release its first Dolby Vision UHD Blu-ray in June

04 May 2017 | Rasmus Larsen |

Power Rangers (2017) will be Lionsgate’s first UHD Blu-ray title in Dolby Vision format. The studio confirms that the disc will be released on June 27, 2017.

Power Rangers in Dolby Vision

Earlier this week, Sony Pictures confirmed that it will jump on the Dolby Vision UHD Blu-ray bandwagon in July. Lionsgate will join the party one month earlier.

Power Rangers is an American superhero movie. Five teens must become extraordinary to save the world from an alien threat. Besides Dolby Vision HDR picture quality, the disc will include Dolby Atmos soundtrack.

Power Rangers UHD Blu-ray
It is Lionsgate’s first disc in the premium Dolby Vision HDR format. At CES in January, the Hollywood studio was confirmed as one of the launch partners for Dolby Vision UHD Blu-ray discs but the “early 2017” timeframe has slipped by a few months.

It is important to emphasize that the Dolby Vision format is implemented as an enhancement layer on UHD Blu-ray discs, meaning that a HDR10 version is also stored on the disc. HDR10 is mandatory under the UHD Blu-ray standard. In other words; the disc will be playable in all UHD Blu-ray players.

Lionsgate, Sony Pictures, Universal, and Warner Bros will all support Dolby Vision on UHD Blu-ray. 20th Century Fox and Paramount have yet to commit to Dolby’s format. Disney/Pixar has not released any UHD Blu-ray titles.

The Power Rangers UHD Blu-ray disc can be pre-ordered from Amazon.com. It will be released on June 27, 2017.
