LG 2016 OLED TVs gain HLG HDR support with latest update

19 Jul 2017 | Rasmus Larsen |

The latest firmware update for LG’s 2016 OLED models C6, E6, and G6 adds support for the HLG format, which will be used to broadcast HDR quality via TV channels.

Update 2: If you are using the HDR Game mode you may want to hold back on installing the firmware as a bug causes it to be way dimmer than it is supposed to.
Update: It has been confirmed that the G6 OLED model in Europe has received firmware version 05.30.01 to add HLG support. The article has been updated accordingly.

But what about the B6?

Firmware version 05.30.02 (version 05.30.01 for G6) has started rolling out in North America, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East. The changelog makes no mention of HLG support but after FlatpanelsHD received a tip we confirmed that HLG video indeed works.

After the update, the 2016 LG E6 OLED correctly detects the HDR layer in our HLG test file and switches to HDR mode, as seen in the photo below. As you may know, the HLG format is designed in such a way that TVs without support simply ignores the extra HDR information. Before the update, the LG E6 OLED recognized the test file as standard video without HDR.

HLG HDR on 2016 OLED

The changelog lists the C6 and E6 OLED models as applicable models, and it has later been confirmed that G6 flagship model has received a similar, although separate, update. There is no mention of the more affordable B6, which uses a non-LG system chip from Realtek. It will require a separate firmware update but the plans are unclear. When LG originally confirmed the news about the HLG update to FlatpanelsHD, they said:

- ”HLG is being implemented in 2016 OLED and Super UHD.”

FlatpanelsHD has since asked for clarification regarding the B6 model but has not received any concrete information. The changelog for the firmware update also lists the UH9500 and UH8500 LCD models from 2016 as applicable.

LG's 2017 OLED models have had HLG support since launch.

We do not have a broadcast signal in HLG format available so we cannot confirm that HLG works via the internal tuner. HLG video streaming from YouTube does not work.

If you own C6, E6 or G6 then check your TV’s settings menu for a pending update. As usual, it is being rolled out gradually. You can also download the update file from the US support page and find similar download links for other regions via Google.
