New Philips 'OLED 973' has a fabric covered soundbar

09 Nov 2017 | Rasmus Larsen |

TP Vision has unveiled its latest Philips TV in the form of the ‘OLED 973’ model that will be available in early 2018. The 65-inch TV comes with 4K, HDR, 3-sided Ambilight, and a fabric covered soundbar as the base.

Philips expands OLED line-up

TP Philips launched its first Philips OLED TV in Europe with the POS901. It was later superseded by the much-acclaimed and successful POS9002, not least because of its aggressive price point.

In early 2018, TP Vision will add two 65-inch models to the line-up, as reported by FlatpanelsHD at IFA. One of these is a 65-inch version of the POS9002 whereas the other is a new model that has been dubbed ‘OLED 973’. It will feature a 60W soundbar integrated in the base of the TV. The soundbar is covered in fabric made by Danish company Kvadrat.

973 has received the Red Dot Design Award. It was first unveiled at the IFA show in the backroom without a model number.

Ambilight and Android TV

The built-in Ambilight system illuminates the wall on 3 sides. The TV is based on Google’s Android TV operating system with apps available from the open app store. A new remote should also simplify operation, the company said.

TP Vision proclaims that the new P5 video processor combined with OLED display technology takes picture quality to new heights. In addition, it emphasized that Philips is the only TV manufacturer to offer Ambilight. Over the years, the system has been expanded to also integrate with Philips Hue and Spotify. Ambilight can also be customized in a number of ways.

The OLED panel is made by LG.Display. It features 4K resolution and supports High Dynamic Range. Philips is currently offering support for HDR10 and HLG. Earlier this week, the company announced that starting in 2018, it will put its weight behind HDR10+, which is a royalty-free alternative developed by Samsung as an alternative to the proprietary Dolby Vision format.

Philips OLED 973 has been confirmed in a 65-inch version only. It will be available in early 2018. Pricing was not announced.
