’Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ is the first movie in the collection that has been confirmed for release on UHD Blu-ray. The release date has not been announced.

Star Wars on UHD Blu-ray

We are still waiting for the official word from Disney but retailers have confirmed that Star Wars: The Last Jedi is coming to UHD Blu-ray. This will allow fans of Star Wars to enjoy the universe in the highest possible quality.

Cover, technical details, and release date have yet to be confirmed but retailers such as Amazon DE and Amazon UK as well as Zavvi have started taking pre-orders. The movie is currently screening in theatres so it will not be released on any home entertainment format until next year.

First restoration finished in 2016

Of course, this begs the question of whether the other movies will be released on UHD Blu-ray, too. Disney and Lucasfilm last year completed a 4K restauration of ‘A New Hope’; the first Star Wars movie. This was confirmed in an interview.

- “On day one, we were in Lucasfilm in San Francisco with Industrial Light and Magic, and John Knowles, our supervisor, he said that they’ve got a brand new 4K restoration print of ‘A New Hope’ – it had literally just been finished. He suggested we sit and watch it,” Gareth Edwards, director of Rogue One told publication Little White Lies.

Hollywood has been quick to embrace the UHD Blu-ray format but Disney was hesitant. After one and a half year, the company finally released ’Guardians of the Galaxy’ on UHD Blu-ray. Disney has yet to release any Star Wars movies or Pixar productions on the disc format.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi has also been confirmed for release on HD Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray and online.
