'The Shape of Water' & 'Dunkirk' biggest winners at Oscars 2018

The Shape of Water won a total of 4 awards, including for best film, at the Oscars 2018. Dunkirk took home wins in 3 technical categories, while Coco won the trophy for best animated film and Blade Runner 2049 was honored with best special effects and cinematography.

Quiet evening for Amazon & Netflix

2018 marks the 90th anniversary for the Oscars, or Academy Awards, where Hollywood meets to celebrate the best of the best. For a few years now, the powers that be have been anxiously observing the new kids on the block, Amazon and Netflix, trying to gauge to what extent they can make their mark on the industry.

However, this year belonged to the incumbents. Netflix grabbed 8 Oscar nominations, most for Mudbound, whereas Amazon had a single for The Big Sick. None of these films took home any awards but Netflix did score a single trophy for its documentary film Icarus on the Russian doping scandal.

One can argue merits but it is a fact that any movie must complete a qualifying run at the cinema before it can enter the competition. It is the second rule of play: ”Publicly exhibited by means of 35mm or 70mm film, or in a 24- or 48-frame progressive scan Digital Cinema format with a minimum projector resolution of 2048 by 1080 pixels”.

The Shape of Water

Best film: The Shape of Water

Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water won in 4 categories, including “the big one” for best film. It was nominated in a total of 13 categories.

Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk won in 3 technical categories. Many critics had pointed to these two movies as the biggest candidates for the best film.

Pixar’s Coco won the Oscars for best animated film and for best original song. Blade Runner 2049 won 2 Oscars for best special effects and best cinematography. Darkest Hour was nominated in 6 categories and took home 2 wins, the same amount as Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
