LG unveils 2018 UHD Blu-ray players - UBK90 supports Dolby Vision

23 Mar 2018 | Rasmus Larsen |

At LG’s European launch event in Madrid, the company confirmed to us that it has two new UHD Blu-ray players planned for 2018. UBK90 will feature Dolby Vision support out of the box, whereas UBK80 is a more affordable option without support for Dolby’s video format.

One with Dolby Vision, one without

The new UBK90 will replace last year’s UB970. Unlike its predecessor, UBK90 will come with Dolby Vision support from the start. It will of course also support the HDR10 base layer, which is mandatory under the UHD Blu-ray standard.

These are UHD Blu-ray players so you need a 4K TV, preferably with good HDR capabilities, to enjoy the pictures. The main difference between UBK90 and UBK80 is lack of Dolby Vision on the latter. UBK90 will have two HDMI outputs, whereas UBK80 will have only one.

LG added that you can use built-in apps to enjoy streaming content. A built-in media player supports a range of file formats and can be used to playback content via USB. The players also supports a range of audio formats, including object-based Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.

Besides UDB Blu-ray, both players will spin your DVDs, CDs, and 3D Blu-rays.

LG UBK90 and UBK80 will be available in the US and Europe this spring. LG did not confirm pricing but the 2018 Blu-ray players are listed online in Europe for 249 and 219 Euro, respectively. We have not yet been able to confirm US pricing.
