Portrait Display has announced that CalMAN auto-calibration will be supported on Sony’s 2018 Master series TVs – A9F and Z9F.
CalMAN AutoCal on Sony TVs
Sony briefly mentioned that its new flagship TVs were “CalMAN ready” at its presentation. The two parties have now confirmed that this is in fact an auto-calibration feature that will be available, for the first time, on Sony TVs.
Portrait Display, the company behind CalMAN, explains that auto-calibration is done for SDR after which it will automatically carry over to HDR for an easier process.
- "You simply connect CalMAN on your computer to the Sony BRAVIA and let CalMAN’s AutoCal make your picture perfect," said Martin Fishman, Co-CEO of Portrait Displays. "CalMAN’s AutoCal ensures that you see the most accurate and life-like images, without missing any of the detail that the MASTER Series is capable of delivering. Once the calibration is applied in SDR, the calibration is carried over to HDR, making Sony’s CalMAN Ready MASTER Series TVs even easier to calibrate."
The company added that auto-calibration should be much faster and more consistent than manual calibration.
- "Providing access to CalMAN’s auto calibration is a major part of Sony’s goal of ensuring the highest level of image quality in the MASTER Series along with making it an easier process to calibrate," said Yasuyuki Tokukura, Chief Picture Quality Officer of Design and Development Division, Sony Visual Products Inc.
As part of the more advanced AutoCal suite, Sony is also adding CMS (Color Management System) controls along with 20-point grey scale controls.
To get started you need the CalMAN software, a colorimeter, and a pattern generator. The feature will be rolled out with CalMAN 2018 R3 that is scheduled to ship at the same time of the 2018 Sony Master TVs.
FlatpanelsHD is currently attending a calibration session in New York and will have more to report on the new feature soon.
