Bang & Olufsen begins rolling out Airplay 2 update

12 Nov 2018 | Rasmus Larsen |

The first Bang & Olufsen products have received the promised Airplay 2 update to make them compatible with Apple’s multi-room system. The staggered roll out is expected to be completed by the end of December.

Airplay 2 in B&O products

Bang & Olufsen was one of the launch partners for Apple’s Airplay 2. It has taken some time to prepare the update but on the other hand Airplay 2 will be made available to a total of 10 existing products.

- “As informed earlier this year, Apple AirPlay 2 will be integrated into selected Bang & Olufsen multiroom speakers. This includes 10 existing multiroom speakers, as an over-the-air update, as well as the new speakers Beosound 1 and Beosound 2 with the Google Assistant and Beosound Edge,” the company said.

Apple Airplay 2 is an expansion of the original Airplay protocol. Version 2 supports multi-room audio and because Airplay 2 is being integrated in speakers from various brands, users can mix and match speakers from brands such as Apple, B&O, Libratone and Sonos. Airplay 2 also allows you to output TV audio from Apple TV wirelessly to multiple speakers.

BeoSound Shape

The first batch of B&O products to receive the Airplay 2 update is BeoPlay M3, Beosound Core, and Beosound Shape (via Core). Owners of M3 and Core confirm that the update is available via the BeoTool app by navigating to the “configure” menu. Up next are Beosound 1 (1st gen), Beosound 2 (1st gen), and Beoplay M5 that will receive the update later this month. Complete details for the roll out can be found in the table below.

The BeoVision Eclipse TV will also gain Airplay 2 but only in its soundbar. Bang & Olufsen notes that the latest versions of Beosound 1 and 2 (mk2 versions) as well as Beosound Edge have Airplay 2 baked in from the start.

Voice control via Siri

Apple has linked Siri to Airplay 2, allowing users to start music playback via Siri on iPhone or iPad. By asking Siri to ”play music in the living room” you can initiate playback on all compatible living room speakers. To get started you need to assign each speaker to a room via Apple’s Home app.

By adding an Apple HomePod to your multiroom system you can also control Bang & Olufsen speakers through voice commands to HomePod. The built-in microphones in B&O’s speakers do not support Siri voice commands.

The Airplay 2 update was originally planned for September but it took a little longer. For more details see the table below.

Airplay 2 – Bang & Olufsen

As informed earlier this year, Apple AirPlay 2 will be integrated into selected Bang & Olufsen multiroom speakers. This includes 10 existing multiroom speakers, as an over-the-air update, as well as the new speakers Beosound 1 and Beosound 2 with the Google Assistant and Beosound Edge.
We did communicate that we would have the AirPlay 2 integration ready by September. However, we have concluded that the integration into our products wasn’t not good enough, so we have decided to do a step by step release over the coming months to ensure a strong customer experience.
AirPlay 2 will be available for 10 existing Bang & Olufsen multiroom speakers as an over-the-air update during November and December in a step by step roll out. The full list of speakers includes:
- Beoplay M3, Beosound Core, Beosound Shape (via the Beosound Core) – November
- Beosound 1 (1st gen) & Beosound 2 (1st gen) and Beoplay M5 – November
- Beoplay A9 (mk2), Beoplay A6, Beosound Essence (2nd gen), Beosound 35 – by end of December
- Beovision Eclipse (audio only) – by end of December
Multiroom speakers that have been announced after May 2018 will have Airplay 2 integrated from sales start. This includes:
- Beosound 1 and Beosound 2 with the Google Assistant – from October depending on region
- Beosound Edge – from mid-November depending on region.
AirPlay 2 enables users of iPhone, iPad or Apple TV to send audio from any app to Bang & Olufsen’s multiroom speakers. AirPlay 2 is a seamless way to enjoy music from your favourite Apple device and is a natural extension of how people live with music.
Bang & Olufsen is proud to bring forward the experience of multiroom control in consumers Apple device and to deliver on the promise that our multiroom speakers connect with all streaming technologies.
With AirPlay 2, Bang & Olufsen speakers will also work alongside Apple's HomePod, so B&O users can use Siri to play music around the house.
