Francis Ford Coppola's epic war film Apocalypse Now is coming to UHD Blu-ray and online digital on August 27, 2019. The final cut will be presented in 4K Dolby Vision and Atmos.
Apocalypse Now in 4K HDR
Apocalypse Now is a classic and for its 40th Anniversary, Francis Ford Coppola and Lionsgate are releasing a newly restored 'Final Cut' mastered from a 4K restoration of the original film negative.
Apocalypse Now: Final Cut will be presented in 4K and Dolby Vision HDR with Dolby Atmos sound on UHD Blu-ray and online digital. In addition, the online digital release will include the theatrical cut and extended cut (Redux) in 4K Dolby Vision and Atmos.
- "The Apocalypse Now Final Cut restoration will be brought to life with Dolby Vision HDR, bringing entertainment to life through ultra-vivid picture quality. When compared to a standard picture, Dolby Vision can deliver spectacular colors never before seen on a screen, highlights that are up to 40 times brighter, and blacks that are 10 times darker. The 4K Combo Pack and Digital 4K release also feature Dolby Atmos audio mixed specifically for the home, to place and move audio anywhere in the room, including overhead. In addition, the film has been enhanced with Meyer Sound Laboratories’ newly developed Sensual Sound, a technology engineered to output audio below the limits of human hearing," said Lionsgate "All of these technologies work together to present Coppola’s true vision of the film, one that delivers deep, visceral visual and auditory impact."
For the film's 40th anniversary, Lionsgate is also giving it a special theatrical release in the US. No other regions were detailed in the press release.
Coppola believes that Apocalypse Now: Final Cut "looks better than it has ever looked, and sounds better than it has ever sounded," and is "thrilled beyond measure to present the best version of the film to the world."
Apocalypse Now was released in 1979 and won three Golden Globes. It is by many considered to be one of the top-100 films of all time. Earlier this month, Alien was rereleased in 4K HDR and film studios have been hard at work restoring classics dating all the way back to the 40's.
The 4-disc UHD Blu-ray includes Apocalypse Now: Final Cut on UHD Blu-ray plus the theatrical cut and extended cut (Redux) on Blu-ray along with lots of bonus material. It will be available on UHD Blu-ray on August 27 for $35. The online digital release will be available on the same day.
