A year after Valve announced Steam Link for Apple TV, the app is now available to download for free. It lets you play PC games on Apple TV via a PC in your home network.
Steam Link for Apple TV
In May 2018, Valve announced that Steam Link was coming to iOS and tvOS (Apple TV) as well as Android and Android TV. However, shortly after Apple rejected the app citing business conflicts, seemingly relating to in-app purchases.
It is unclear what has happened in the meantime but the bottom line is that it has taken a year for Apple and Valve to come to an agreement. Steam Link is now available on iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch) and tvOS (Apple TV).
- "The Steam Link app is now available for free for all iOS and Apple TV users! The app allows gamers to stream their Steam library to their iPhone, iPad or Apple TV. Get it on the App Store," Valve announced.
If you are unfamiliar with Steam Link, think of it as a network link between your PC and another screen that allows you to play PC games (from Steam) on your handheld device or TV screen. Install the free Steam Link app on Apple TV, iPhone or iPad to get started.
- "Just pair an MFI or Steam controller to your device, connect to a computer running Steam on the same local network, and start playing your existing Steam games," the company explained.
You can pair a compatible game controller to Apple TV. Valve explained that Steam Link for Apple TV is supported over 5GHz WiFi or Ethernet, and that it requires tvOS 11 or later. With iOS, gaming is not currently supported over mobile networks. This capability (Steam Link Anywhere) is currently limited to Android.
Steam Link supports games in up to 4K resolution and 60fps but that requires a cabled network connection.
- "Over a 5 GHz network, our target is 1080p at 60 FPS with good quality for most scenes. If you have a powerful gaming rig, wired network, and a very good client device, it's possible to stream at 4K 60 FPS."
The Steam Link app for iOS and tvOS is free and can be downloaded from the app store. More information can be found on steampowered.com.
