Disney releasing six Marvel titles on UHD Blu-ray today

13 Aug 2019 | Rasmus Larsen |

Today, Disney is releasing no less than six Marvel titles on UHD Blu-ray; Avengers: Endgame, the Iron Man trilogy, and two Thor movies. Next month, it will release nine Pixar titles plus more on UHD Blu-ray.

Avengers, Iron Man & Thor

In the coming weeks, Disney will release a flurry of movies on UHD Blu-ray, starting today, August 13, with Avengers: Endgame, Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3, Thor, and Thor: The Dark World. In June 2019, Disney said that all Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films would be remastered in 4K. Iron Man and Thor are coming today in the US - in Europe in late August or early September - while Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, and Ant-Man are expected to arrive on UHD Blu-ray later this year. Avengers: Endgame is obviously a new release and the rest are already available.

Nine Pixar titles next month

Next month, Disney will release no less than nine Pixar titles on UHD Blu-ray. Brave, Cars, Cars 2, Finding Nemo, Finding Dory, Inside Out, Ratatouille, and The Good Dinosaur will all be available on September 10, 2019, in the US. Details for Europe have yet to be announced. Toy Story 4 is expected to followed shortly after while details about the remaining Pixar titles have yet to be confirmed. It is not clear why Disney has decided to release some of its biggest titles in batches rather than on different dates but it could be related to the launch of its streaming service Disney+. The company has confirmed that it will offer movies and TV shows in 4K HDR quality through Disney+ and once it launches for $7 per month a $30+ UHD Blu-ray disc will be a hard sell to anyone other than true enthusiasts. The many titles are expected to also become available in 4K HDR and/or Dolby Atmos through online services such as Vudu and Google Play Movies. Apple and Disney have yet to reach an agreement to offer Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Lucasfilm titles in 4K HDR on iTunes. The Marvel titles are available today on amazon.com and the Pixar titles can be pre-ordered.
