Hulu adds support for offline downloads, but with limitations

09 Oct 2019 | Rasmus Larsen |

Following in the footsteps of Amazon and Netflix, Hulu has added support for offline downloads on iPhone and iPad, with Android support coming later. However, there are some noteworthy limitations.

Update 23.10.2019 Hulu downloads are now available on Android smartphones and tablets, too.

Download Hulu content

Hulu's move comes almost 3 years after Netflix took the step, and it arrives with some noteworthy limitations. First of all, you must subscribe to Hulu's $12 subscription plan to get acces to the new downloads feature. - "Available today on iOS for viewers on our Hulu (No Ads) plan, you’ll now be able to download thousands of shows and movies," the company announced. Hulu says that "thousands of titles", including Family Guy, Desperate Housewives plus its own originals, can be downloaded but not all titles are supported for offline viewing - likely due to rights issues. If you navigate to the 'Downloads' tab at the bottom you will find a 'See What's Downloadable' button.

Hulu downloads

You can download up to 25 titles across 5 different devices. You have 30 days to start watching downloaded content before it expires, or just two days after starting playback. Good luck explaining that limitation to your kids. Downloads will be coming to Android devices "soon", Hulu added. Hulu is now owned almost entirely by Disney who is planning to also offer a downloads feature on Disney+ when it launches next month. - Source: Hulu
