Acer has unveiled the Predator CG552K, a 55-inch OLED gaming monitor with support for HDMI VRR, Adaptive Sync and Nvidia G-Sync. However, it lacks HDMI 2.1 and HDR support, and will cost you $3000 / €2700.
Acer OLED gaming monitor
Last year, Dell launched the 55-inch Alienware AW5520QF; a very expensive OLED gaming monitor without HDMI 2.1 and HDR support.
Now Acer is following in its footsteps with a similar OLED gaming monitor that carries a slightly less obscene price tag but still has major gaps in its list of supported features.
After years of suffering through IPS LCD panels claiming to bring HDR picture quality to PCs, OLED panels were supposed to finally let PC gamers experience what HDR (High Dynamic Range) is. And then, big PC monitor brands launch OLED gaming monitors without even base level support for HDR.
Acer's 55-inch Predator CG552K supports HDMI VRR, Adaptive Sync and Nvidia G-Sync. It is based on the same LG Display 4K OLED panel as all of the OLED TVs out there, including LG's 2020 OLED TVs that will feature HDMI VRR along with other systems. However, Acer's monitor lacks HDMI 2.1, making it a poor choice for console gaming, as it severely limits resolution and frequency range over HDMI.
It is hard to see who these OLED gaming monitors are targeting as you can get OLED TVs with better gaming features for a lot less. On the other hand competition cannot hurt and Acer's monitor has at least a few advantages such as two DisplayPort 1.4 inputs, USB Type-C, and a funky design.
- "With its built-in proximity sensor, the Predator CG552K is able to detect if someone is within range, waking up when they’re close and entering a power-saving mode when they leave the area. Excellent connectivity to a wide range of systems, consoles and peripherals includes three HDMI 2.0 ports, two DisplayPort v1.4 ports, a USB Type C port as well as two USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports. Two 10W speakers deliver 20W of dynamic audio and customizable light strips enhance the hardware aesthetic," the company said.
Acer says that its Predator CG552K will be available in North America in Q3 starting at $2,999 and in Europe in Q3 starting at €2700.
