The Star Wars episode 1 to 9 saga films will be released on UHD Blu-ray as the ‘Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga’ box-set in March. It comprises 27 discs, including lots of extras.
Star Wars on UHD Blu-ray
A few of the most recent Star Wars movies are already available on UHD Blu-ray as separate discs but this is the first time that all 9 saga films can be enjoyed on UHD Blu-ray.
The films will be released as the ‘Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga’ box-set, which comprises 27 discs; all 9 titles on UHD Blu-ray and HD Blu-ray, respectively. The remaining 9 discs will include lots of extras, with one disc dedicated to each movie.
The UHD Blu-ray discs will present the movies in 4K resolution and HDR (format not specified). However, be aware that some of the movies were shot digitally in 1080p HD so these will be upscaled. Disney+ is already streaming them in 4K Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos and we know from these releases that Company 3, the company responsible for the color grading of the new versions as well as The Mandalorian, has opted for softer dynamic range than what the HDR standards enable. This is a creative choice, the company has explained.
The discs are expected to have higher bitrate than the streaming versions on Disney+.
The Star Wars box-set is expected to be released on March 31 in the US for $250. The release date for Europe has yet to be announced. It can be pre-ordered now.
