Last week, Universal made three theatrical releases available early for streaming. As of this week, 10 theatrical releases are available to enjoy at home - with more on the way.
Premium VOD titles
Movie theaters across many regions of the world remain closed so studios are making theatrical releases available early to viewers at home via services such as Apple TV, Google Play, and Vudu.
Disney was the first to make a move by making Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker available earlier than planned in some regions. However, it was scheduled to be released in the US a few days later anyway. More notably, Disney made Frozen 2 available on Disney+ three months ahead of schedule as well as Onward just a few weeks after it hit theaters.
Universal made its move last Friday by making three theatrical releases, The Invisible Man, The Hunt and Emma, available as 'premium VOD' rentals for $20. It also announced that Trolls World Tour will skip its planned theatrical release entirely in the US and a few other regions. Instead, Trolls World Tour will be made available as a premium VOD title on April 10.
And this week Birds of Prey, Bloodshot, The Way Back, and The Gentlemen were released ahead of schedule, with additional titles planned for next week. Bad Boys For Life and Sonic the Hedgehog are expected on March 31 while some movies planned for theatrical release are moving to Netflix in the near future, including The Lovebirds and Time to Hunt.
No plans were announced to move forward the dates for Blu-ray / UHD Blu-ray releases.
