'Lawrence of Arabia', 'Dr. Strangelove', other classics to debut on UHD Blu-ray
Sony Pictures has announced that it will debut six of the most iconic movies from its library on UHD Blu-ray as part of the Columbia Classics collection in June.Columbia Classics on UHD Blu-ray
The Columbia Classics 4K collection will include Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Lawrence of Arabia, Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, A League of Their Own, and Jerry Maguire. Sony Pictures has confirmed that the UHD Blu-ray limited edition collector's boxset will be available on June 16, 2020. The six titles will only be available on UHD Blu-ray only as part of this collection - not individually. Jerry Maguire and Lawrence of Arabia have been available through online storefronts such as Apple TV (iTunes) in 4K (but not HDR) for some time while the other titles are available only in HD resolution. The studio did not comments on its plans for digital release. Each film has been "fully restored in 4K resolution with High Dynamic Range", the studio said. Some titles are available in Dolby Vision HDR while others come with HDR10. Four of the movies can be enjoyed in Dolby Atmos. FlatpanelsHD was inside the studio in 2013 when Lawrence of Arabia was being restored, frame-by-frame, in 4K.- "The six films in the Columbia Classics 4K Ultra HD Collection are only available on 4K Ultra HD disc within this special collector’s set with a limited-edition run of fewer than 8,000 units in the U.S. Included with the collection is a gorgeous hardbound 80-page book, featuring in-depth sections about the making of each film within the set via an all-new essay written by acclaimed film historian Julie Kirgo," said Sony Pictures. The boxset is branded "Volume 1", which suggests that the studio is planing to release more UHD Blu-ray collections in the near future. The Columbia Classics 4K collection can be pre-ordered on amazon.com for $113 and will be released on June 16 in the US.
