Sony Pictures to release 'hundreds of new titles in the IMAX format'

05 May 2020 | Rasmus Larsen |

Sony Pictures will "release hundreds of new titles in the IMAX format over the next two years". This includes all upcoming IMAX theatrical releases.

Hundreds of IMAX titles

Sony Pictures, IMAX, and DTS said that "at least 100 new titles" will be released in IMAX Enhanced across Europe, North America and Asia Pacific over the next 12 months, with hundreds of additional titles to follow in the years to come. This includes "all upcoming Sony Pictures Entertainment and IMAX theatrical releases". - "We are thrilled to announce an expansion of our support of the IMAX Enhanced program with hundreds of additional titles from the legendary SPE catalog, as well as new, theatrical releases for best-in-class home entertainment. The success that SPE has enjoyed in collaborating with IMAX and DTS has inspired the decision to significantly increase our commitment and volume of content to meet the growing demand for IMAX Enhanced," said Pete Wood, SVP at Sony Pictures Entertainment. What is IMAX Enhanced? No one really knows for sure. Sometimes it includes the expanded IMAX aspect ratio but not always. Sometimes IMAX Enhanced 4K releases are in HDR10+ format and other times in the HDR10 base format. It also uses "a special variant of the DTS:X codec technology" but IMAX Enhanced compatible devices (such as Sony TVs) do not necessarily support DTS:X.

 IMAX Enhanced

The companies argue that IMAX Enhanced is "the only way to experience IMAX’s signature picture, sound and scale outside of a movie theater". The initiative was launched in September 2018 and is now available on 4 streaming platforms in 14 countries and across 17 consumer electronics manufacturers, the companies said. At this time movies like Spider-Man: Far From Home, Jumanji: The Next Level, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Venom, Bad Boys For Life, Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse are available as IMAX Enhanced titles. As part of the announcement the companies also reiterated that they are "designing an IMAX Mode, meticulously calibrated to deliver the best viewing and listening experience in the home".
