Apple TV+ in 2020 & 2021: Nature documentaries, movies, sci-fi series, more

After movies like Greyhound and series like Ted Lasso and Defending Jacob, you can look forward to nature documentaries, major movies, sci-fi, and lots of new series on Apple TV+. Here is the list.

2020 and onwards

Apple will continue its strategy of releasing fewer but higher-profile productions than, say, Netflix. Apple TV+ typically debuts a new title or episode each Friday. Follow the link to see new releases from the first half of 2020. Apple has not said how many subscribers Apple TV+ has but the company has made it clear that it wants to take on more established players like HBO and Netflix.

New titles for the second half of 2020:

  • September 18, 2020: Long Way Up is "an epic motorcycle series, starring Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman, which reunites best friends after more than a decade since their last motorbike adventure around the world".
  • September 25, 2020: Tehran is an 8-episode espionage thriller that "tells the thrilling story of a Mossad agent who goes deep undercover on a dangerous mission in Tehran that places her and everyone around her in dire jeopardy".
  • October 2020: On The Rocks is a comedy movie produced in collaboration with A24 starring Bill Murray, Rashida Jones and Marlon Wayans about "a young New York mother faced with sudden doubts about her marriage teams up with her larger-than-life playboy father to tail her husband".
  • October 2, 2020: Tiny World is a nature documentary series narrated by Paul Rudd that "takes a unique perspective on the natural world, exploring the ingenuity and resilience of the smallest animals on the planet".
  • November 13, 2020: Becoming You is a documentary series. "A global child development series that explores how the first 2,000 days on Earth shape the rest of our lives"
  • December 4, 2020: Earth At Night In Color is a nature documentary series narrated by Tom Hiddleston. It uses "next-generation cameras to reveal the nocturnal lives of animals, in color, for the first time ever".
  • Later in 2020: Losing Alice is a psychological neo-noir thriller in 8 episodes. "A thrilling cinematic journey that uses flashbacks and flash-forwards in a satisfyingly complex narrative that takes the viewer through the conscious and subconscious of its protagonist’s mind".

    Confirmed titles without a release date:

  • Foundation is the first TV series based on based on Isaac Asimov's science fiction books that are considered to be some of the best science fiction novels to date. You can watch a trailer here.
  • Invasion is a sci-fi series about an alien invasion that has been described as one of Apple's most ambitious projects.
  • Killers of the Flower Moon is the next big project from Martin Scorsese based on the book of the same name about the Osage murders in the 20's that led to the formation of the FBI. Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro will star in the movie.
  • Severance is a drama series produced by Ben Stiller described as "a workplace thriller that introduces Lumen Industries, a company that’s looking to take work-life balance to a new level".
  • Fireball is a documentary by Werner Herzog that takes viewers on an "extraordinary journey to discover how shooting stars, meteorites and deep impacts have focused the human imagination on other realms and worlds, and on our past and our future".
  • Slow Horses is a drama series starring Gary Oldman and based on Mick Herron's British espionage books. It follows "a team of British intelligence agents who serve in a dumping ground department of MI5 – Slough House".
  • Swan Song is a movie starring Mahershala Ali that will premiere in theaters before it hits Apple TV+. "Set in the near future, the film explores how far someone will go, and how much they’ll sacrifice, to make a happier life for the people they love".
  • Suspicion is a drama series starring Uma Thurman based on the Israeli False Flag. It is described as "a high-paced thriller about the kidnapping of the son of a prominent American businesswoman".
  • The Shrink Next Door is a dark comedy series in 8 episodes starring Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd and based on the most popular podcast of 2019. "The series explores how a seemingly normal doctor-patient dynamic morphs into an unprecedentedly exploitative relationship filled with manipulation, power grabs and dysfunction at its finest".
  • Fraggle Rock is a reboot of the classic kids show. Gobo, Red, Boober, Mokey, Wembley and Uncle Travelling Matt reunite for new songs and adventures.
  • Hedy Lamarr is an 8-episode series about "the 'most beautiful woman in the world', Hedy Lamarr who was first exalted and iconized, then destroyed and eventually forgotten by American audiences".
  • Sharper is a movie produced in collaboration with A24 that follows "a con artist, played by Julianne Moore, set in the world of Manhattan’s billionaire echelon".
  • The Afterparty is a comedy series in 8 episodes by Chris Miller and Phil Lord. It is described is "a murder-mystery comedy set at a high school reunion afterparty".
  • Palmer is a movie starring Justin Timberlake that follows "a former college football phenomenon named Eddie Palmer who, after a stint in prison, returns to his hometown to get his life back on track".
  • Echo 3 is an action thriller series in 10 episodes based on When Heroes Fly about "a brilliant young scientist that foes missing along the Colombia-Venezuela border".
  • Shining Girls is a metaphysical thriller series based on the novel of the same name about "a Chicago reporter who survived a brutal assault only to find her reality shifting as she hunts down her attacker". Elisabeth Moss stars in the lead role.
  • Harriet the Spy is an animation series based on the kids book of the same name from 1964 "that chronicles the coming-of-age adventures of the irrepressible Harriet M. Welsch".
  • Mariah Carey's Magical Christmas Special is a holiday event that will "feature the legendary icon Carey and a star-studded lineup of surprise guest appearances, in a magical holiday journey to enliven the Christmas spirit around the world".
  • My Kind of Country is competition series about "a global search for unconventional and extraordinary country music".
  • Snow Blind is a movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal.
  • Emancipation is an action movie starring Will Smith about a runaway slave during the Civil War-era in the US.
  • The Sky is Everywhere is a movie based on the book of the same name and produced in collaboration with A24.
  • Pachinko is an 8-episode series based on the Korean novel of the same name, and is said to be one of the biggest budgeted productions from Apple.
  • Shantaram is a 10-episode series based on the novel of the same name.
  • Mosquito Coast starring Justin Theroux is an adventure series based on the novel of the same name. Furthermore, it has been confirmed that Ted Lasso will get a second season in 2021. Truth Be Told, Trying,and Little America have also been renewed in addition to those already confirmed. Most titles on Apple TV+ are available in 4K resolution with Dolby Vision HDR as well as Dolby Atmos audio. The Apple TV app is available on Apple devices as well as Samsung TVs (Tizen), LG TVs (webOS), Roku, and FireTV. It will arrive later on Sony and Vizio TVs.
