New Chromecast with Google TV has full user interface & remote

30 Sep 2020 | Rasmus Larsen |

Google has today unveiled 'Chromecast with Google TV'. It has a full user interface, remote control, and support for up to 4K Dolby Vision. Stadia will be supported in 2021.

Chromecast with Google TV

The device leaked in its full form last week and today Google officially unveiled its plans. Chromecast is no longer just a cast device. it now has a full user interface and remote control. It can be connected to any TV via HDMI. The new user interface is called Google TV and it is based on Android TV. It is a type of 'skin' on top, like skins for Android phones. It means that you have access to the same TV apps (as on Android TV), including Disney+, HBO Max, Netflix etc. But the home screen user interface will look quite different.

With the Google TV user interface, Google is putting content first. "No switching apps. Just watching," is the new slogan. Titles from supported streaming services will be features directly on the home screen, and divided into sections. You can search for content across services via voice commands. - "Chromecast with Google TV has your favorite Chromecast features and now comes with the all-new Google TV entertainment experience. Google TV experience brings together movies, shows, live TV and more from across your apps and subscriptions and organizes them just for you. We're also bringing our most requested feature—a remote—to Chromecast," said Google. The device support video-streaming in up to 4K HDR with 60fps, including Dolby Vision HDR. Dolby Atmos is supported as pass-through only (no decoding).

Stadia in first half of 2021

What is not supported at launch is Google's cloud game service, Stadia. It will launch on the new Chromecast devices and presumably other Android TV devices "in the first half of 2021", said Google. Chromecast with Google TV will also be limited to a few regions at launch as the new user interface requires deep integration with international and local services. Chromecast with Google TV is available in three colors starting today in the US for $50. It will come to Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain and the UK, on October 15, and will expand to additional regions in late 2020.
