Google TV coming to TVs from Sony & others in 2021

30 Sep 2020 | Rasmus Larsen |

The Google TV skin for Android TV will not be exclusive to the new Chromecast device. Google confirms that Google TV will come to TVs from Sony and others in 2021.

Google TV skin

Today, Google launched the Chromecast with Google TV. It is an Android TV device with a skin (called Google TV) on top, much like Android phones with custom skins. The Google TV user interface and experience will also come to TVs currently running "pure" Android TV. Today, the Android TV homescreen looks identical across all devices, including TVs from Sony, Philips, and TCL (Europe) as well as media players like Nvidia Shield. - "Starting in 2021, Google TV will also be available on televisions from Sony and other Android TV OS partners," said Shalini Govilpai, Senior Director, Google TV.

Chromecast with Google TV

Google only mentioned Sony by name but makes it clear that Google TV will also come to other partners. We hear that Philips is planning to host an event in early 2021 where it will share its future plans for Android TV. The company added that there are now "more than 6,500 apps built for Android TV OS so you can access your favorites across gaming, fitness, education, music and more". Google Stadia, the cloud gaming service, will launch on Chromecast with Google TV in the first half of 2021. We expect it to be available on other Google TV / Android TV devices too. Lastly, the company said that the Google Play Movies & TV app for Android mobile devices will be rebranded to Google TV with a fresh new design. - "Last but not least, we know that your TV isn't the only place for watching entertainment. To make it easy to discover and enjoy your entertainment no matter where you go, Google TV will also be available via the new Google TV app, which will begin rolling out today to Android mobile devices in the U.S. as an update to the Google Play Movies & TV app."
