The struggling 'mobile-first' streaming service Quibi has launched TV apps for Apple TV, Android TV, and FireTV in what appears to be a last attempt for survival.
Netflix and Disney+ have both attracted tens of millions of viewers during the coronavirus pandemic. HBO Max and Peacock are also both off to a good start, according to estimates.
Another major streaming service, with close to $2 billlion in pre-launch funding, launched earlier this year but you may not be familiar with it. Launched as a 'mobile-first' streaming service, Quibi wanted to serve "quick bites" of video entertainment.
After a lackluster launch, Quibi changed its tune and refocused on getting its content onto the big screen. First with AirPlay 2 and Chromecast during the summer, and now with TV apps for Apple TV, Android TV, and Amazon FireTV. The TV apps are available now.
That is good news, but is it too late? The Information reports that the founders have been trying to sell Quibi. They may even decide to shut down the service entirely.
