Nokia-branded Android TV box launched in Europe

16 Nov 2020 | Rasmus Larsen |

The so-called 'Nokia Streaming Box 8000' comes pre-installed with Android TV version 10, unlike most other Android TV devices on the market.

With Android 10

Android TV media players like Nvidia Shield and Xiaomi Mi Box have yet to be updated to Android version 10. The new Nokia-branded box on the other hand comes with version 10 pre-installed. The box is manufactured by Streamview, who has licensed the Nokia brand. The new media player from "Nokia" is, however, unlikely to match Nvidia Shield in terms of hardware and format support. The company says that it supports 4K (at up to 60fps) but there is no mention of HDR or Dolby Atmos audio. It has been confirmed that the box is built on an Amlogic S905X3 chipset. Full specifications can be found below Also read: Review: Nvidia Shield (2019)

It runs the official version of Google's Android TV operating system meaning that the user interface is identical to what you see on Shield, Sony TVs, Philips TVs etc. You can download apps like Amazon, Disney+, Netflix and YouTube from the Google Play store that also has a selection of games. Since it is an Android TV device, it comes with built-in Chromecast and Google Assistant. There is a remote control in the box.

Besides "Nokia", Android TV-powered devices are available from brands like Sony, Philips, TCL, Xiaomi, Sharp, Nvidia and Panasonic as well Google who recently introduced the first Android TV device with a new 'Google TV' user interface. Nokia Streaming Box 8000 will initially be available in Germany, Austria and Switzerland where it will sell for 100 Euro.
