What is next?

The three movies are major releases from Disney and it is a testament to the current state of the market. Even before coronavirus, global 'home entreatment' grew rapidly to surpass theatrical box office in 2016. In October 2020, Disney announced a reorganization to "focus primarily" on streaming and to "further accelerate the company’s direct-to-consumer strategy, in light of the rapid success of Disney+". Disney+ topped 100 million subscribers just 16 months after launch. The company also adjusted theatrical release dates for some of its upcoming movies:
  • Free Guy on August 13, 2021
  • Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings on September 3, 2021
  • The King’s Man on December 22, 2021
  • Deep Water on January 14, 2022
  • Death on the Nile on February 11, 2022
