HBO Max has added support for 4K streaming on Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One X/S to let console users enjoy the small but growing selection of 4K movies.
HBO Max on Xbox
HBO Max added support for 4K, HDR (HDR10 and Dolby Vision), and Dolby Atmos in December 2020 to mark the premiere of Wonder Woman 1984. All of the 17 same-day Warner Bros premieres planned for 2021 will be available in 4K HDR on HBO Max, the company said at the time.
HBO Max has now added Xbox to its list of supported devices for 4K streaming, as noted on reddit. This includes Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X, according to the company's documentation. You must update your HBO Max app to the latest version.
You can now watch HBO Max in 4K on the following devices:
Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K and Fire TV Cube
Android TVs, including: AT&T Streaming Box
Apple TV 4K
Google Chromecast Ultra and Chromecast with Google TV
4K LG Smart TVs
Roku Ultra 4800x, Roku 4k TVs, Roku Premiere, and Roku Streaming Stick+
4K Samsung TVs
VIZIO 4K Smart TVs
Xfinity X1 (Xi6) and Flex
Xbox One S, Xbox One X, and Xbox Series X|S
Note that HBO Max's 4K and HDR labels show up even on non-supported devices with the disclaimer: "Where Available".
- "Dolby Atmos is not available with Chromecast with Google TV, LG Smart TVs, Roku Premiere, Roku Streaming Stick+, and VIZIO 4K Smart TVs," the company noted.
HBO Max has yet to enable 4K streaming on PlayStation consoles.
