PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X were both launched almost a year ago but they are still not readily available. The game console shortage will continue into 2022, warns Xbox chief Phil Spencer.
Not just a chip problem
The situation is affecting not only 'next-gen' game consoles and graphics cards but also older consoles and many other types of products. It is not just a chip problem, according to the Xbox chief.
- "I think it’s probably too isolated to talk about it as just a chip problem," Xbox chief Phil Spencer told The Wrap.
- "When I think about, what does it mean to get the parts necessary to build a console today, and then get it to the markets where the demand is, there are multiple kind of pinch points in that process. And I think regretfully it’s going to be with us for months and months, definitely through the end of this calendar year and into the next calendar year."
His assertion is backed up by others in the industry. Toshiba, a key supplier of power regulating chips, said in a statement to Bloomberg that supply issues "will remain very tight until at least September next year".
