Google TV adds user profiles, watchlists & more

12 Oct 2021 | Rasmus Larsen |

Google has announced new user profile features for Google TV to make it a more personal experience in the home, rolling out globally on Chromecast, Sony Google TVs and TCL Google TVs.

Google TV personalization

As rumored, Google TV – the new user interface on top of Android TV – is getting multi-user support. With a user profile you get your own personal watchlist and recommendations. - "Google TV profiles let everyone in your home enjoy their own personalized space with their Google Account. With a personalized profile, you’ll get TV show and movie recommendations just for you, easy access to your personal watchlist and help from your Google Assistant," said Rob Caruso, Director of Product Management and UX, Google TV. The new user profile features will "soon" be added globally to Chromecast (with Google TV), Sony Google TVs, and TCL Google TVs – most likely through an automatic update of the Google TV Home app.

New Google TV user profile features:

In Google's own words: Recommendations tailored to you, and only you: As you watch TV, your profile takes into account your interests and preferences to help you discover more of what’s out there for you. And for the little ones, you can always set up a kids profile to help them access a fun collection of movies and shows under your guidance. Access to your own watchlist: When a friend tips you off to a hot new show, you can always add it to your watchlist to save it for later. Each Google Account has its own watchlist, so your finds will show up right in your profile and stay separate from your other’s lists in your household. Help from your Google Assistant: Ask for recommendations by saying, “what should I watch?” or get help streamlining your day by saying “show me my day.” Your profile is linked to your account’s Google Assistant, so you’ll get the personalized answers you are looking for.

Other new features

Google is also adding "personalized information and recommendations at a glance" to Ambient Mode, which is the screensaver function for when a Google TV device is idle. These cards give you updates on weather, news, music, game scores, podcasts, photos, and more. The cards will be personalized based on your user profile and the information that Google collects on you. At launch, these features will be available only in the US on Chromecast (with Google TV), Sony Google TVs, and TCL Google TVs. - "If you are off for a longer break, your TV will shift fully to your ambient mode’s photos or curated artwork after a few minutes," added Google.

Lastly, Google said that its 'Live' and 'For you' tabs now integrate with Philo in the US in addition to YouTube TV and Sling TV. Google TV is currently available only in the new Chromecast, 2021 Sony TVs, and select 2021 TCL TVs. It is expected to find its way to more TVs and devices later this year and next year.
