Disney+ hits nearly 130m subs, reveals 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' premiere date

Disney+ ended 2021 with 129.8 million subscribers worldwide, up 11.8 million in the fourth quarter. Obi-Wan Kenobi will debut on May 25 and Futurama will return with 20 new episodes.

Disney's original goal was to reach 60-90 million subscribers after four years. In just one and a half year after launch, Disney+ already has nearly 130 million, according the company's latest financial report. Netflix still leads with 222 million subscribers. - "This marks the final year of The Walt Disney Company’s first century, and performance like this coupled with our unmatched collection of assets and platforms, creative capabilities, and unique place in the culture give me great confidence we will continue to define entertainment for the next 100 years," said Bob Chapek, CEO, Disney. Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ combined are approaching 200 million streaming subscribers – 196.4 million at the end of 2021. The company confirmed that the new Star Wars series, Obi-Wan Kenobi, will debut on May 25, 2022, to mark the 45th anniversary of the release of Star Wars: A New Hope. The series stars Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen. Disney also announced that Futurama will return with 20 new episodes in 2023. In the US, it will debut on Hulu and internationally it is expected to debut on Disney+ Star. Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story will debut on Disney+ in the US and most international countries on March 2. In related news, Pixar this week released the trailer for its next movie Lightyear. It will premiere on June 17, 2022, but Disney has not confirmed if it will be exclusive to theaters or not.
