World's first true QLED display with 8K resolution unveiled

19 May 2022 | Rasmus Larsen |

China's BOE has showcased the world's first true QLED display with 8K resolution. The 55-inch display can be produced using inkjet printing.

Two years after BOE showcased the first 55-inch QLED TV panel with 4K resolution, the Chinese display panel maker has showcased a 55-inch 8K QLED TV panel at the SID Display Week 2022 conference in San Jose, California.

- "This world's first 55-inch 8K AMQLED display utilizes electroluminescent quantum dot technology, combining with the oxide TFT driving and inkjet printing process for all functional layers (except cathode), which made it the real 'active self-emitting quantum dot display'," announced BOE.

This is true a QLED display as opposed to Hisense, Samsung og TCL's "QLED TV" which is a marketing term for a conventional LCD TV with a quantum dot film between the LED backlight and LCD panel. At this time, there are no QLED displays available on the commercial market.

Wide color gamut, long lifetime

BOE refers to it as an active matrix quantum dot light-emitting diode (AMQLED) display, or simply QLED. It is a self-emitting display where electroluminescent quantum dots act as individual pixels. - "Comparing to quantum dot backlight technology, AMQLED is free of backlight, while the quantum dots are laminated by injected current. AMQLED technology has the advantages of self-emitting, wide color gamut, and long lifetime, etc., which make it the direction of quantum dot display technology." QLED technology is still in the development phase but it attracts "R&D attentions from academia and major players in display industry around the world", said BOE. In the future, QLED could emerge as a self-emissive display alternative to OLED and microLED. - Source: BOE
