Netflix is rolling out a new 'Mystery box' feature for kids

23 May 2022 | Rasmus Larsen |

The feature is designed to help kids discover new shows and movies on Netflix, much like the service's 'Play something' button for adults.

On a TV device, open the Netflix app and select a kids profile. The mystery box should now appear in the 'Favorites Row' at the top of the homepage.

- "Kids are drawn to what they love — their favorite toys, foods, songs — and it’s hard to get them to try something new. So today, we’re launching a new mystery box feature on TVs around the world to provide a fun and safe space for kids to discover their next favorite series and films or reconnect with a familiar face," announced Netflix.

The mystery box feature is rolling out globally on TV devices starting this week. This includes Smart TVs and various streaming boxes. You should update the Netflix app to the latest version. Over the past year, Netflix has also rolled out a kids top-10 row and enhanced parental controls.

No support for Apple TV?

The mystery box button does not appear to be visible on Apple TV which is not entirely surprising since Netflix's tvOS app also lacks features like 'Play something' and support for interactive shows. In addition, Netflix has disabled AirPlay functionality in its app which means that users can no longer browse shows from an iPhone or iPad and then push the video stream to a compatible TV or the Apple TV box.
