Sony's new PlayStation Plus service launches in South & North America

13 Jun 2022 | Rasmus Larsen |

Sony's new game subscription service, still named PlayStation Plus, is now online in North and South America with over 700 games in the most premium tier.

After an early launch in Asia, the new PlayStation Plus service, which appears to be Sony's response to Xbox Game Pass, is now live in the Americas. It will expand further to Australia, New Zealand and Europe on June 23, 2022. In all regions it swallows PS Now.

- "We’ve brought together PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now in an all-new PlayStation Plus membership service that provides more choice and value to customers across three membership plans globally: Essential, Extra, and Premium (Deluxe in non-streaming markets). Our focus is on providing a curated and diverse game portfolio, with hundreds of high-quality titles to choose from when you subscribe to Extra or Premium (Deluxe)," said Sid Shuman, Senior Director, SIE Content Communications.

PS Plus is now divided into three tiers:
  • PS Plus Essential ($9.99 monthly / $24.99 quarterly / $59.99 yearly) offers the current PS Plus benefits at the same price.
  • PS Plus Extra ($14.99 monthly / $39.99 quarterly / $99.99 yearly) adds around 400 PS4/PS5 games for download including some catalog titles from PlayStation Studios.
  • PS Plus Premium ($17.99 monthly / $49.99 quarterly / $119.99 yearly) adds hundreds of additional PS3, PS2, PS1 and PSP games, some of which can be downloaded and streamed (720p) while others (PS3) must be streamed, plus game trials.

No TV apps, no launch day releases

Titles include games such as Death Stranding, God of War, Demon’s Souls, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, NBA 2K 22, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Returnal. New games from Sony's game studios will not be added on launch day. You still have to purchase them separately. Classic games in North America are the 60Hz NTSC versions as opposed to 50Hz PAL versions in some other regions. Unlike Microsoft which will launch an Xbox app for Samsung Smart TVs later this month, Sony has yet to announce plans for TV apps. At this time, you are limited to playing PS Plus games on PS5 and PS4 consoles or PC (game streaming only). You can check out the full game catalog included in the new PS Plus on playstation.com here.
