Report: BOE planning to commercialize OLED TV panels from 55" and up

14 Jun 2022 | Rasmus Larsen |

China's BOE is believed to be preparing a total of five OLED TV panels starting at 55 inches. Production could begin as soon as this year, according to Biz Chosun.

Last month, we heard that panel maker BOE is planning to commercialize the 95-inch 8K OLED panel showcased at Display Week 2022.

A new report claims that BOE is actually planning a total of five OLED TV panel sizes.

- "On the 6th, market research firm DSCC announced in a recent report that China's BOE is preparing to commercialize large OLED panels for TVs. It is known that there are a total of five types of TV OLED sizes that BOE is preparing for commercialization, ranging from 55 inches to 95 inches. In fact, they plan to make OLED panels of all sizes sold for TVs," reported Korean Newspaper Biz Chosun (translated).

If true, China's BOE will join South Korea's LG Display and Samsung Display in producing OLED TV panels for use in TVs sold by various consumer brands. LG Display currently supplies its WOLED panels to around 20 TV brands while Samsung Display supplies its QD-OLED panels to 2 TV brands.

BOE has successfully commercialized OLED in small and medium-sized displays. Its OLED TV panels are expected to go into production later this year.

- "BOE decided to test-produce OLED panels for TVs on the 8th generation (2200mm × 2500mm) B5 R&D production line in Hefei, China. The industry expects annual shipments to be around 300,000 units this year. Although this is only 0.1% of the total TV shipments last year (213.54 million units), it is more than 5% based on TV OLED panels (6.52 million units last year)."

BOE's OLED panel exhibited at Display Week 2022 had display characteristics such as 800 nits peak brightness, 150 nits fullscreen brightness, 120Hz refresh rate, and 99% DCI-P3 coverage – in line with LG Display's WOLED panels.
