Like Samsung, LG believes that there is a market for 'Smart Monitors'. The 32-inch 32SQ780S has PC inputs plus AirPlay 2 and webOS 22 with streaming apps.
Samsung pioneered the concept of smart monitors in 2020 and recently refreshed its line-up with the M8 models. It is in essence the idea of a thin client – a virtual computing model that runs on a central server rather than a local PC – although not fully realized yet.
You can still use a smart monitor with a Windows PC or Mac by connecting it via HDMI or USB-C but LG and Samsung imagine that you want to use their respective TV operating system, webOS and Tizen, for your multimedia needs; video streaming, game streaming, music, and more.
LG's 32-inch 32SQ780S features an IPS LCD panels with 3840x2160 resolution, 60 Hz refresh rate, 90% DCI-P3 coverage, 2x5W stereo speakers, two HDMI ports, three USB ports including USB Type-C (65W), a LAN port, and an ergonomic stand (extent/retract, swivel, pivot, height, tilt).
With webOS and AirPlay 2
It is a general purpose monitor that has not been optimized for gaming, graphics or other professional tasks.
WebOS 22 provides access to streaming apps such as Amazon, Apple TV and Netflix, but it is not clear if the monitor will have all of the same apps as LG's TVs with webOS 22.
In addition, the monitor is compatible with Apple AirPlay 2 to let you cast music, video and other media files to the monitor from an iPhone, iPad or Mac.
Unlike Samsung's M8, there is no camera in LG's smart monitor.
The 32-inch LG 32SQ780S Smart Monitor will be available soon for $500 from amazon.com and other retailers.
