Samsung Display mulls production of 27" QD-OLED monitor panel

10 Nov 2022 | Rasmus Larsen |

Samsung Display, the manufacturer of display panels, is considering expanding production capacity to make more QD-OLED monitor panels at a new facility.

LG Display is reportedly planning to start production of 27-inch and 32-inch WOLED panels. Samsung Display might follow in its footsteps with 27-inch QD-OLED, according to a report by Korean newspaper The Elec.

- "The South Korean display panel maker was considering investing in QD-OLED production at its newly planned factory, likely to be called A5, UBI Research CEO Choong Hoon Yi said in a seminar in Seoul on Wednesday," reported The Elec. "A5 will manufacture panels using Gen 8.6 substrates and its main target is 27-inch monitors, Yi said, while Cupertino will be the main customer."

In addition, Samsung Display will start production of two-stack RGB OLED panels for tablets and laptops with the main customer also believed to be Apple. Korean media have previously reported that Apple is planning to switch to OLED in iPad in 2024 and in Macs in 2025 at the earliest. Apple currently uses LCD panels in all iPad and Mac models.

Samsung Display had considered using RGB OLED for monitors but eventually settled on QD-OLED. The first 34-inch QD-OLED monitors arrived earlier this year and Samsung Display is planning a 49-inch monitor panel for 2023.

UBI Research did not comment on the timeline for the A5 factory or smaller QD-OLED monitor panels.
