Dell Alienware unveils its first 500Hz gaming LCD monitor

03 Jan 2023 | Rasmus Larsen |

At CES 2023, Dell has announced the 24.5-inch Alienware 500Hz AW2524H gaming monitor based on a IPS LCD panel with 1920x1080 resolution. 500Hz requires DisplayPort.

The first 240Hz OLED gaming monitors are coming in 2023 to redefine the gaming space but if you want the fastest possible refresh rate you are still relegated to LCD. Asus introduced the first 500Hz LCD monitor last year and Dell has at CES 2023 announced its version.

Better than 240Hz OLED?

The key question is if 500Hz LCD is actually better than 240Hz OLED? The latter already outperforms a typical 360Hz LCD in terms of gaming performance as actual performance is a combination of multiple factors including refresh rate, response time, rise/fall characteristics, overdrive, input lag etc. Dell says that the monitor's minimum response time is 0.5 ms (g2g) while the "most observed" response time is 1 ms (in Extreme Mode). This is likely accompanied by some level of overdrive trailing – a halo around fast-moving objects. The refresh rate is how many times per second the screen can refresh while the response time is how fast the individual pixels react to each of those refreshes. For comparison the first 240Hz OLED monitors have 0.03 ms (g2g) response time – and the capabilities to reproduce black, high contrast, and HDR.

Dell explained that it is a 'Fast IPS' LCD panel with 480Hz refresh rate that is overclocked to 500Hz. It supports Nvidia G-Sync with Reflex Analyzer. It accepts 480 / 500Hz input over DisplayPort 1.2 but maximum 240Hz over HDMI. That is because, despite claims of HDMI 2.1, the port is limited to HDMI 2.0 bandwidth. - "Introducing the monitor with the world’s fastest refresh rate of 500Hz, the Alienware 500Hz Gaming Monitor (AW2524H)," said Yoon Lee, VP of Monitors, Dell Technologies. "Coming in at a 24.5-inch full high-definition (FHD) resolution with a supersonic refresh rate of 500Hz overclocked (480Hz native) on a Fast IPS panel, this elite display offers incredible frame rates to deliver stunning motion clarity in fast-paced games and help gamers clinch victory." Pricing will be announced closer to the shipping date in first quarter of 2023.
