Samsung unveils 2023 S95C and S90C QD-OLED TVs in 55-77"

04 Jan 2023 | Rasmus Larsen |

Samsung will add a larger size to its 2023 S95C so that the QD-OLED line-up spans 55 to 77 inches. It will have the external One Connect box, HDMI 2.1, Tizen, and the Gaming Hub.

S95C is the successor to last year's S95B – Samsung's first QD-OLED TV. The company said that it is the first OLED TV to be AMD FreeSync Premium Pro certified. The 4K QD-OLED TVs once again support Dolby Atmos audio but there is still no support for Dolby Vision. It is thinner than last year's S95B because it now has the external One Connect box that includes ports.

- "And with a 0.1- millisecond response time and up to 144Hz refresh rate, S95C eliminates ghosting – onscreen blurs when images fade rather than completely disappear – and offers calibration and visualization options not found on other televisions," said Samsung.

Samsung will also launch a S90C QD-OLED model without the One Connect box. It will be available in 55 to 77 inches, too, with a less advanced speaker system.

Samsung Electronics did not provide many details but Samsung Display, the panel maker, yesterday said that the 2023 QD-OLED TV panel can reach more than 2000 nits peak brightness. Samsung S95C will in 2023 compete with QD-OLED TVs from other brands as well as improved WOLED models such as the LG G3 with MLA-based OLED technology. The addition of a 77-inch size is a step forward but QD-OLED is still not matching the wide 42 to 97 inch span of WOLED.

Dolby Atmos speakers, Gaming Hub

Samsung S95C is powered by Samsung's 'Neural Quantum Processor 4K' video processor which has a new SDR-to-HDR upscaling feature called 'Auto HDR Remastering'. It is fitted with a 4.2.2ch 70W speaker system for Dolby Atmos – an upgrade over last year's 2.2.2ch system. As for the Smart TV features, Tizen has reached version 7.0 and in some regions it comes with the Gaming Hub that offers access to cloud gaming. Samsung has not announced plans to upgrade previous years' TVs to Tizen 7.0. They are stuck on whatever major Tizen version they came with. - "The S95C’s cloud gaming support with Gaming Hub is peerless, from the world’s first 4K support for NVIDIA GeForce NOW to the availability of Microsoft Xbox, Utomik, and Amazon Luna," said Samsung. In 2023, Zigbee and Matter Thread will be directly built into Samsung TVs, meaning that you no longer need a separate SmartThings dongle for smart home integration. Samsung S95C will be available in the first half of 2023. Pricing details will be confirmed later.
