One of the best history-driven console games of all time, The Last of Us, has been adapted to a TV series and is now available to stream on HBO Max in up to 4K Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.

HBO's The Last of Us series, in which "Joel and Ellie must survive ruthless killers and monsters on a trek across America after an outbreak", is debuting to rave reviews (Rotten Tomatoes). It is one of the best PlayStation games and is shaping up to also be one of the must-watch series of 2023.

The Last of Us follows another HBO hit show, House of the Dragon, as Hollywood companies continue to scale up investments in cinematic-scale series in addition to movies. At the same time, it is part of Sony's plan to turn more of its console game franchises into TV series or movies.

Ahead of the premiere HBO Max announced a price increase in the US. Starting February 11, existing subscribers to the ad-free plan will see a price increase to $16 per month, up $1.

4K HDR and Dolby Atmos

The Last of Us is available in 4K resolution with HDR10 or Dolby Vision, depending on your device, as well as Dolby Atmos audio if you own capable equipment. - "'The Last of Us' will be available in HD on all supported devices and 4K ultra HD on select devices with the Ad-Free plan," said HBO. For example, Samsung TVs do no support Dolby Vision and HBO Max does not offer content in HDR10+, so such devices will fall back on standard HDR10. The first episode is available now on HBO Max, with new episodes every Sunday (North America) or Monday (Europe).
