PS VR2 is now available with over 40 games including 'Horizon', 'Gran Turismo 7'

Sony's second-generation VR headset for PlayStation is now available with an OLED display with 4K HDR support and up to 120Hz. There are more than 40 launch games.

PlayStation VR2 is equipped with the technology to take VR gaming one step further. Unlike the LCD display in Meta's current VR headsets, PS VR2 has a fast OLED display capable of HDR. It supports PlayStation's 3D audio format, eye tracking, and headset vibration. The 'Sense' controllers have haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.

- "Providing extraordinary experiences to gamers is what we strive for at PlayStation, and today we are thrilled to start this new chapter in virtual reality gaming with PlayStation VR2," said Jim Ryan, President and CEO, Sony Interactive Entertainment. "PlayStation VR2’s innovative technology has helped unlock the creativity of the industry’s finest developers, who have designed outstanding games that deliver a greater sense of presence for players. I can’t wait for fans around the world to experience PlayStation VR2 for themselves."

Content and cost challenges

The downsides? It requires a wired connection to the PlayStation 5 console but the bigger challenges relate to price and content. At $550 / €600 / £530, PS VR2 is more expensive than the PlayStation 5 console and it is not backwards compatible with any original PS VR games. Sony says that there are more than 100 titles currently in development but this number includes PS VR games being software updated to run on PS VR2. At launch, around 40 new or existing games will work on PS VR2, according to a list curated by Polygon, as seen in the table below.

This includes major titles such as Horizon Call of the Mountain, Gran Turismo 7 (free update), Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge, No Man's Sky (free update for PS VR owners), and Resident Evil Village (free update). The key question is if Sony can keep momentum in game development going, which will depend on how well PS VR2 sells. Bloomberg has claimed that Sony has cut sales projections based on low pre-orders but Sony denies that it has affected its production plans. Microsoft currently has no plans to launch a VR headset for Xbox. PlayStation VR2 is available starting this week in the US, parts og EU and the UK from PlayStation's own website and other major markets from participating retailers.
