Netflix now lets you customize subtitles on the TV screen

09 Mar 2023 | Rasmus Larsen |

Netflix now lets you adjust the size and style of subtitles on TV devices. The app update is rolling out this week globally.

Netflix already lets you customize subtitles in the web browser and similar functionality is now supported in Netflix's app for various TV platforms including Smart TVs, media players, and game consoles.

It is unclear if Apple TV (tvOS) will also get the new options as Netflix withholds many features on Apple's platforms including AirPlay 2, interactive content, top-10 lists, and the ad-supported plan.

The update to Netflix's TV app, which is rolling out gradually starting this week worldwide, will let the user choose between three text sizes and three additional text styles in addition to the classic style.

Netflix subtitles

Video streaming on TV screens such as Smart TVs, media players, and game consoles represented roughly 77% of streaming time globally in 2022, according to analyst firm Conviva. Subtitles are widely used in international territories but 50% of Americans now also opt to enable subtitles, according to a study by Preply.

Some other major streaming services already let you customize subtitles, while some TV platforms have system-level settings for subtitles.
