TCL's latest 8K OLED TV prototype folds into a table

31 May 2023 | Rasmus Larsen |

TCL has yet to launch any OLED TVs on the consumer market but the company continues its work on inkjet printing technology that in the future will allow it to print super-thin OLED TVs.

TCL CSoT showcased new OLED prototypes at SID Display Week 2023 in Los Angeles, with one of the most interesting concepts being the 65-inch inkjet-printed 8K OLED TV that folded into a table.

The 8K OLED prototype is shown below in a video by OLED-Info.com. In addition, it can rotate down to become a flat surface as part of the table.

TCL says that it is the first of its kind. - "The world's first 65-inch 8K ink-jet printing flexible OLED display brings to the industry the largest flexible OLED foldable screen based on ink-jet printing technology to date with the highest resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. The screen uses IGZO TFT backplane technology and ultra-high-precision ink-jet printing technology to present a smooth and intricate display of an astounding 33 million pixels per frame. Combining ultra-thin and high-strength flexible module materials, the product has a bending radius of less than R25mm and a bending life of up to 100,000 times," TCL CSoT said in a statement.

Rollable OLED displays

The other OLED prototype shown in the video is a 14-inch rollable 4K OLED panel that TCL imagines can be used in a laptop or another portable device. The company had also brought a similar 31-inch rollable OLED prototype. TCL CSoT said that it will continue the development of inkjet-printed OLED technology on its own after its partner JOLED filed for bankruptcy a couple of months ago. In addition, the company told OLED-Info.com that it will start some form of production of inkjet-printed OLED panels later in 2023, but it is unclear what it amounts to.
