Samsung Electronics is preparing to debut a 83-inch OLED TV with an LG Display panel, according to Korean media. It may launch as soon as September.
Following lengthy negotiations, LG Display and Samsung Electronics reached a deal in May 2023 under which LG Display will supply Samsung Electronics with millions of WOLED panels per year for use in Samsung TVs.
Business Korea is now reporting that Samsung has completed registration of a 83-inch OLED TV model called KQ83SC90A with the National Radio Research Institute in South Korea. Certification is required before a TV can be manufactured and sold. For example, LG and Samsung go through this procedure every year ahead of CES with their new TVs.
Samsung's current S90C OLED TV
An interesting detail here is the model number, which suggests that the 83-inch OLED TV will be part of Samsung's existing S90C range (SC90A is the Korean model name for S90C). If true, this will be confusing as the smaller 55, 65, and 77-inch S90C sizes feature QD-OLED panels.
Launch in September?
The model would represent Samsung's first 83-inch OLED TV and it would bring more competition to this segment of the market. Only LG Display can currently mass-produce 83-inch OLED panels, and 83-inch OLED TVs are available only from LG Electronics and Sony at this time.
The report said that Samsung's 83-inch OLED TV could launch as soon as September.
- "According to the industry, the two sides have only a little fine-tuning left to do. It has already been reported that some of the initial quantities have been supplied. New products may be launched as early as September," wrote Business Korea.
This timing would stage the launch to coincide with the IFA 2023 consumer electronics show in Berlin.
Business Korea also claimed that Samsung Electronics and LG Display are looking to "establish a visible OLED alliance".
