Apple TV+ unveils new Godzilla series, reportedly shot in 'Immersive Video' 3D format

Apple has announced a new Godzilla and Titans live-action series called Monarch: Legacy of Monsters that has reportedly been filmed in the 'Immersive Video' format for Apple Vision Pro.

The 10-episode series starring Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell will debut on Apple TV+ in the near future.

- "Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking revelation that monsters are real, “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” tracks two siblings following in their father’s footsteps to uncover their family’s connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch," said Apple. "The dramatic saga — spanning three generations — reveals buried secrets and the ways that epic, earth-shattering events can reverberate through our lives."

What is more interesting, though, is that Monarch: Legacy of Monsters may represent the beginning of Apple's journey into 3D and immersive movies.

Perhaps Apple has even dropped a hint about this with the first-look picture below. Notice the wide aspect ratio, which is exactly 21:9 (3840/1605 = 21:9) – significantly wider than 16:9 on TV displays.

In June when Apple announced the Vision Pro headset, the company also announced a new 'Immersive Video' format designed for "180-degree high-resolution recordings with Spatial Audio". It is an evolution over stereoscopic 3D that allows the user to be more immersed and to look around. And Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has been shooting in this format, according to Screen Times podcast host Sigmund Judge's sources in June at WWDC 2023. The immersive shots will most likely be extra content or select sequences rather than full shows but obviously things will evolve if Vision Pro and subsequent headsets from Apple prove to be successful commercially. - Source: Sigmund Judge, David Altizer
