Sony is rolling out Android 10 with new features for 2018-2020 TV models

12 Nov 2023 | Rasmus Larsen |

Sony has started upgrading 2018, 2019 and 2020 OLED and LCD models from Android 9 to Android 10. The firmware also adds new features such as Living Decor.
Update: Sony Japan informs FlatpanelsHD that the update will roll out in Europe starting "late November".
The firmware update is available now in North America and Asia, and is coming soon to Europe. "A major software update (Android 10) is scheduled to begin sometime around October 2023 for your Android TV model," announced Sony.

Sony A9G Android 10

Sony's A9G/AG9 OLED is one of the models to receive Android 10 as part of the firmware update

The firmware update applies to 2018, 2019 and 2020 Sony TV models including popular ranges such as A9F/AF9, A9G/AG9, A8/A8H, X950G/XG95, X950H/XH95 and X850H/XH85. A full list of models can be found in the table at the bottom.

Besides the upgrade from Android 9 to Android 10, the firmware includes new features such as Living Decor, which is a "function that allows your TV to be used as a photo frame, clock, or to look like a part of an interior". The TV settings menu is getting a new layout and some setting options have been renamed. After updating, users will also be able to control and update compatible Sony soundbars directly from the TV’s settings menu, and it will be easier to pin your favorite broadcast channels. Sony’s full changelog is included below. It is a gradual roll-out and it normally takes several months for new Sony firmwares to reach all compatible models worldwide. Look for the update in your Sony TV's update menu or download it directly (for installation via USB stick) from your local Sony support site. Android 10 is not the most recent version of Android for TV, but better late than never. Most of Sony's 2023 models are also running Android 10 except for the A95L QD-OLED, which is the first Sony model to use the MediaTek Pentonic 1000 chip that comes preloaded with Android 12.
