Oppenheimer will soon be able to enjoy at home and director Christopher Nolan says that a lot of work has gone into the home version, particularly the disc release.
In a rare move, Oppenheimer will be simultaneously released through online VOD movie stores and on physical discs such as UHD Blu-ray.
The 3-hour R-rated drama will be available for purchase later this week.
- "I'm known for my love of theatrical and put my whole life into that, but, the truth is, the way the film goes out at home is equally important," director Christopher Nolan said at a November 13 screening event in Los Angeles, according to Variety.
Nolan: Own 'Oppenheimer' on discAt the event, Nolan encouraged the audience to buy Oppenheimer on disc rather than stream it, partly due to the better audio quality (lossless on disc versus lossy online) and partly because of the ownership model.
- "'The Dark Knight' was one of the first films where we formatted it specially for Blu-ray release because it was a new form at the time," he continued. "And in the case of 'Oppenheimer', we put a lot of care and attention into the Blu-ray version (...) and trying to translate the photography and the sound, putting that into the digital realm with a version you can buy and own at home and put on a shelf so no evil streaming service can come steal it from you."
While Nolan's comments may seem somewhat misguided, given that Oppenheimer will initially release on disc and on VOD movie stores for purchase rather than subscription streaming services that are known to remove movies occasionally (VOD stores are not, although it is technically possible), he does raise a valid point about movie ownership. As long as there are Blu-ray drives available to spin your Blu-rays, you can continue to enjoy your favorite movies at home.
If you are looking to buy Oppenheimer on UHD Blu-ray, it is priced at $30.
