A full-screen video ad takes over the Fire TV homescreen the moment the device is turned on, according to user reports.
Like Nvidia Shield, Amazon Fire TV is now displaying full-screen video ads, as reported by owners of Fire TV devices on Reddit.
- "In this video no one has a remote. This behavior occurs everytime I turn on the TV from any source. Voice, Fire remote, or FireTV app... immediate ads... Unacceptable," wrote Reddit user RadioactiveT.
You can see an example below.
More ads on Fire TV
The change has seemingly been implemented by Amazon as a server update rather than a firmware update, as part of the company's announcement that it is introducing new ad formats on Fire TV.
Amazon has gradually increased the ad load in recent years for the millions of users who have purchased a cheap Fire TV device.
For now, it is possible to prevent at least some of the ads on Fire TV by turning off auto-play and personalized ads in the settings menu.
Similarly, Google and Roku are increasing the ad load on Google TV and Roku OS, while LG and Samsung are introducing ads in webOS and Tizen, despite consumers paying full price for high-end LCD and OLED TV models.
