The redesigned Apple TV app will not be exclusive to Apple's own devices; it will also be available on Smart TVs, streaming players, gaming consoles, and other devices.

The redesigned Apple TV app was released earlier this month and fully replaces the iTunes app on Apple devices.

At the time, it was not clear if the redesign is intended only for Apple devices or if it will also come to third-party devices where the app is available. Apple has confirmed that it will indeed.

- "Today Apple unveiled a redesigned Apple TV app that makes it even easier for users to watch Apple’s award-winning original series and films, as well as live sports, movies, and television shows across their favorite Apple devices, smart TVs, streaming sticks, gaming consoles, and more," announced Apple.

The company did not comment on timing but it will likely vary between third-party platforms.


Sidebar menu, user profiles
The redesigned Apple TV app has a number of changes to the user interface. The most prominent change is the introduction of a new sidebar menu. There is also a new Home tab as well as profiles on living room devices.

The Apple TV app lets you buy and rent movies in up to 4K Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and Dolby Atmos. Additionally, it grants users access to subscription content from Apple's partners along with Apple's own services such as TV+ and MLS Season Pass.

On the other hand, it is missing key features such as the wish list and the ability to see the video and audio quality of a movie when that same title is also available through partner streaming services such as Disney+ or (HBO) Max. In such cases, the logos in the app default to the lowest common denominator for video and audio.

For older third-party devices, a simplified version of the app, named Apple TV+, is available. This version is limited to access the Apple TV+ subscription service, excluding movie rentals. Given its minimal functionality, it is unlikely to receive the update, as there is no need for the new sidebar menu.
