LG unveils 2024 OLED TVs: B4, C4, G4, M4 – MLA in 83", Chromecast, 144Hz

Ahead of CES 2024 next week, LG has unveiled its OLED TV line-up with MLA still reserved for G4 and M4 but now up to 83 inches. Other new features include Alpha 11, Chromecast and 144Hz.

LG's most popular OLED model, C, is not getting the most advanced display technology MLA (Micro Lens Array), which will still be reserved for the more expensive G4 and M4 models. C4 will, however, support up to 144Hz refresh rate, as reported by FlatpanelsHD last year, and the 42 and 48-inch sizes will get notably brighter than in 2023, according to LG, while to other C4 sizes may be slightly brighter than last year's C3.

LG's G4 and M4 models will have MLA technology (including heatsink which is always part of the MLA OLED panel) expanded to include the 83-inch size, unlike last year where it topped out at 77 inches.

LG is saying that G4 is up to 150% brighter in peaks (3% window – slightly brighter than in 2023) compared to B4 and 70% brighter as a whole (about the same as 2023). M4, which is more or less the same TV as G4 just with a wireless connection box, will in 2024 also be available in 65 inches and 97 inches (without MLA).

Another change in 2024 is that B4 will finally be equipped with four HDMI 2.1 ports, which in the past was one of the differences compared to C4. B4 will, however, not support 144Hz, maxing out at 120Hz. 144Hz is only relevant with compatible PCs – not game consoles such as PS5 and Xbox. LG B4 will also be available in 48 inches for the first time. LG did not announce new A series OLED TVs – the company's cheaper 60Hz OLED – and said that the A series will most likely not be available globally this year.

Alpha 11 processor

As reported by FlatpanelsHD in September, LG has a new Alpha 11 processor for video and audio. Alpha 11 will be found exclusively in G4 and M4. In its official presentation, LG said that Alpha 11 delivers 4x the AI performance, 1.7x the graphics performance, 1.3x the processing power, and 2.5GB of RAM. It features "AI Super Upscaling", HDR dynamic tone-mapping, object enhancing, and "AI Director Processing". LG said that it even works on DRM-protected content from the likes of Netflix, unlike last year's Alpha 9. Those are all picture enhancement systems that you can turn off, if you prefer. - "LG’s newest OLED TVs come with upgraded AI upscaling utilizing precise pixel-level image analysis, to effectively sharpen objects and backgrounds that may appear blurry. All driven by the discerning judgment of the AI itself, the company’s OLED TVs deliver a more clear and vibrant viewing experience. Moreover, the ingenious AI processor adeptly refines colors by analyzing frequently used shades that best convey the mood and emotional elements intended by filmmakers and content creators. Dynamic Tone Mapping Pro splits pictures into blocks and fine-tunes brightness and contrast by analyzing variations in brightness where light enters the scene, creating images that look more three-dimensional," explained LG. In terms of audio, it has a "Voice Remastering" feature to enhance voices and it can virtualize 11.1.2-channel audio from a normal audio signal. It also has the audio features previously found in the Alpha 9, which is implemented in C4 while a new Alpha 8 chip is found in B4. Another new feature in 2024 is Filmmaker Mode for Dolby Vision, which FlatpanelsHD is chasing more details on at CES 2024. Of course, the 2024 models will have all of the features from the 2023 models including Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, DTS audio support, Wowcast for wireless TV audio with compatible soundbars, VRR, HDMI 2.1 QMS, and LG's Gaming Dashboard which now includes the option to switch between 120 and 144Hz.

New features for 2024

Both LG's 2024 LCD and OLED models will run webOS 24 that we will learn more about at CES 2024 next week. LG has revealing a major change to webOS; it will upgrade webOS in its TVs to the latest version for four years. More details can be found here. It applies to some previous OLED TV models, too: - "This upgrade applies to the company’s 2022 OLED TV models and 2022 QNED Mini LED 8K models, and in the future, will be extended to more LG TV products worldwide as well, enabling the customers who purchase these LG TVs to benefit from distinctive user experiences thanks to the continuous five-year webOS upgrade," said LG. Another new feature in 2024 is built-in Chromecast meaning that LG's 2024 TVs will support both Apple AirPlay 2 and Chromecast to let you push content wirelessly from both Android and iOS devices onto the TV. They also support Matter, the new universal smart home standard. Full specifications and more details about LG's 2024 OLED TVs can be found in the TV Database, where you can also compare the 2024 models to previous models side-by-side using the orange icon, or by clicking the model names in the table below. FlatpanelsHD will report back after seeing the new TVs in action at CES 2024. Pricing details will be announced closer to launch in spring.
