'Auto-calibrated' Prime Video mode debuting on Sony TVs

19 Apr 2024 | Rasmus Larsen |

The "first auto-calibrated mode" is coming to Sony TVs this year with Prime Video Calibrated Mode, which automatically adapts to the type of content and also utilizes the TV's light sensor.

Do you remember when FlatpanelsHD reported last year that Tom Cruise can now remotely change the picture settings of your Sony TV? Amazon Prime Video's new feature is the first implementation of this system by an external partner.

Announced at a Sony launch event in Los Angeles with FlatpanelsHD in attendance, BA Winston, VP of Technology at Prime Video, referred to it as the "first auto-calibrated mode" – an evolution over the existing Netflix Calibrated Mode in Sony TVs.

The new mode will be on by default when using the Prime Video app on compatible Sony TV.

An adaptive system

Amazon's claim to have the "first auto-calibrated" system refers to the feature's ability to automatically detect the type of content from Prime Video. For example, it can distinguish between movies/series and sports. The former content type will be reproduced just like in a calibrated Movie mode, while the detection of a live sports broadcast will boost brightness, change color temperature, and apply a little motion smoothing, according to Prime Video and Sony. In total, Prime Video Calibrated Mode has 8 predefined presets, including different presets for LCD and OLED models.

Works with all content

BA Winston confirmed that it will work across Prime Video's full catalog of original titles, licensed titles, MGM titles, and live sports. There is a flag in the video stream to identify the type of content. Prime Video Calibrated Mode will also take advantage of the TVs' light sensors to match brightness to your viewing environment at any given time. Sony confirmed to FlatpanelsHD that it works with SDR and HDR10 content. The mode will remain enabled in the menu when you play Dolby Vision content but will not actually do anything here; the Sony TV will continue to use Dolby's processing for all Dolby Vision content.
