Disney cuts back on Marvel releases

08 May 2024 | Rasmus Larsen |

Disney CEO Bob Iger announced a plan to reduce Marvel content output as part of a new strategy to focus on quality. Expect two series and two, maximum three, movies annually.

The streaming business has fallen short of Disney's expectations, and the theatrical business is struggling. Marvel has been a cornerstone of both, but the hit machine has also been sputtering in recent years.

Marvel Disney

Marvel has been a flagship franchise for Disney+ and theatrical releases.

Disney is now adjusting its strategy to focus on quality, particularly for Marvel, according to CEO Bob Iger, as reported by Variety. - "We're slowly going to decrease volume and go to probably about two TV series a year instead of what had become four and reduce our film output from maybe four a year to two, or a maximum of three," Bob Iger said during Disney's earnings call this week.

2025 and 2026?

It is currently unclear how the strategic shift will affect the release calendar for 2025 and 2026, as there are eight Marvel movies planned for the next two years. It is possible that premiere dates will shift in the near future. Upcoming Marvel movies include Deadpool & Wolverine, Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, The Fantastic Four, Blade, and a fifth Avengers movie. Upcoming Marvel series for Disney+ include Agatha, Ironheart, and Daredevil: Born Again. Iger also said that Disney will be shifting the balance more towards Pixar sequels in the coming years, including Inside Out 2 and the next Toy Story. - Source: Variety
