Chromecast is a standard feature of Android TV and Google TV devices, but it is also available in some TV models running other operating systems. Here's an updated list.

Launched in 2013, Chromecast changed the TV market. It made it easy and convenient to get started with Netflix and other streaming services on the big screen by relying on a connected device (with apps) that most of us already owned: a smartphone.

In the beginning, Chromecast was a separate device – a dongle –but it has since evolved into a software stack that can be integrated into Smart TVs – no dongle required. The software was previously called 'Chromecast built-in,' but the official name is now Google Cast.

Built-in Chromecast works as you would expect, with two caveats. On your smartphone, tablet or PC, you press the cast icon in any supported streaming app to move the video stream to the TV screen.

The first caveat is that built-in Chromecast typically counts as a device registration, meaning that if your streaming service puts restrictions on how many devices you can be logged into at any given time, the TV device with built-in Chromecast will count as one, and your smartphone will count as another. The older Chromecast dongles do not count as a device in this example.

The second caveat is that the Chromecast dongles let you change the refresh rate from Google's smartphone app to match the content you are playing or the region you are in (Europe is 50Hz, North America is 60Hz, etc.) to avoid judder. Built-in Chromecast typically follows the TV platform's refresh rate, and while you can sometimes change it, it is not always possible or convenient. Whether this is an issue depends on what you watch.

Other than that, it is very convenient to have Chromecast built into a TV device, as it also allows you to share your local media and photos, or mirror your entire smartphone or PC screen. Some TVs offer both Google's Chromecast and Apple's AirPlay.
