LG Display has entered exclusive negotiations with TCL CSOT to sell its last remaining LCD plant. TCL previously acquired Samsung Display's LCD assets.
Samsung Display has already exited LCD panel manufacturing, forcing Samsung Electronics to source LCD panels for "QLED" TVs mainly from Chinese LCD panel makers.
LG Electronics could soon face a similar conundrum as LG Display, the panel maker, moves forward with plans to exit LCD manufacturing. This would force LG Electronics to source LCD TV panels for its "QNED" and other LCD TVs from Chinese panel makers.
From Korea to China
Korean media are reporting that LG Display has selected China's TCL CSOT as the preferred bidder for its last remaining LCD panel manufacturing site in Guangzhou, China.
The deal is expected to close by the end of 2024 for 2 trillion won ($1.5 billion).
After the sale, LG Display will focus exclusively on OLED technology. The funds from the sale are expected to go towards expanding LG Display's OLED manufacturing capacities for small-to-medium sized displays.
